Production
Shooting of the film - Lights camera action
Involves the camera crew, lighting department, sound department, directorial department, runners location etc. Producers and line producers not necessarily on set - often stay behind and coordinate from production office.
Low-budget films might be shot over a period of five to six weeks. Sometimes this will involve 18-hour days, often six days a week. Bigger budget films take much longer to film (75-120 days) might require multiple film crews in multiple different locations.
Post-Production
Involves editing and sound.
The editing suite was, at one time, known as the cutting room, because film reels had to be literally cut and spliced together
More often than not achieved digital now, often on premier pro, David suites or Macs.
Also involves sound design, with dubbing mixers and foley artists. Could also involve special effects depending on the film. Editors cut films together grade them, add filters etc.
EXAMPLES OF PRE, PRODUCTION, AND POST PRODUCTION ROLES
Pre production roles
1: Storyboard designer - A storyboard designer is essentially someone who is given a set description of scenery and a story that the producer wants and then is tasked to design and make a rough sketch of it. Doing this allows the director and producer to get a good idea of what the scene might look like in the Production phase and can help to decide if the director and producer want to make changes.
2: Set designers - A set designer is some who is required to create the ideal location / scenery for the production team to use to be able to create a good production and film. Using the set creates a strong scenery and location theme, this could be for example on the film Sweeney Todd the whole set was made to seem dark and dull to resemble London in the victorian times.
3: Costume designer - A costume designer is someone who is there to ensure that the clothing / mise-en-scene that is used within the film / scene is relevant to what is going on. For example in starwars if you are on an imperial ship you would typically see the costumer designer designing storm troopers and Sith costumes for the scene.
Production roles
1: Script editor: A script editor will be someone who is on set next to the director. Essentially how it would work is that the scenes would be played out and if the director didn't like what was being said he would tell the script editor to change some of the writing to better fit the scene.
2: Cinematographer / camera operator: Is the person who records and films all shots and movements being played out within the scene, this means they have to get each shot perfect such as a crane shot and ensure that they are the best quality and perfect timings that they can be.
3: Actors: Actors are the individuals who are within the scene of production. They are the ones who will act out the scene they are instructed to perform and make the scene feel as if its a real situation.
Post-production
1: Composer: A composer will wait for the production to be finished of the film, they will then be given the film and be told to orchestrate set music pieces to perfectly fit the film. If the composer was to mistime something within the film they likely would lose significant pay compared to what they would have gotten.
2: Special effects: Special effects are those people who work on the effects within the film. This could mean something such as if the scene is being taken place in space and there is an explosion. It is their job to ensure that the explosion is given an as effective look as possible.
3: Editor: An editor within a film is the individual who ensures that the film is produced in a smooth manor ad all cuts and scene/shot changes are perfect as can be. They can potentially work for weeks on end doing this.
